There is far too much emphasis being placed on footfall in Northampton town centre and the powers that be, although they are keen to rejuvenate Northampton, just have no idea how much the car parking affects life in the town.
We are not Milton Keynes by any stretch of the imagination as we have no decent shops, no suitable meeting places, no real entertainment, no true area of culture and lots of litter – agreed? The passion for the centre has gone which is a real shame.
And car parking is a real problem…people will not come into town to work, because the costs are ridiculous; the option to use buses is only possible if you live 10 minutes out of town and on a direct route and if you do not have to collect children from school, look after elderly relatives or have outside appointments.
Yes we know people are campaigning, but if anyone is listening you will lose whatever business that is still in town if something isn’t done soon to embrace the parking costs – it’s not the people of Northampton who have screwed up with budgets for local services and they are not all council employees who can park somewhere for so many hours for free and/or keep moving their cars during the day. People will and are finding jobs outside of Northampton town centre and soon very few will have any reason to come in at all.
The time to do something is now before the car parking completely kills the Northampton workforce altogether!!
