What’s in a name? Your name is probably one of the most important things in your life. It’s how your friends and family will refer to you, if you hear it you will instantly turn your head in that direction (Cherry Phenomenon), it is most likely on pretty much everything that you own from your email address, to your credit card and everything in between.
Have you ever wondered whether your name potentially affects your search for true career happiness. If you are a fairly normal, run of the mill kind of name it has probably never crossed your mind but what happens if it is so normal that it just doesn’t stand out enough? Will it get you lost with all the other applicants with the same or similar names?
Likewise, If you have a rather unusual name or one which they may feel uncomfortable to use, for whatever reason; does it stop employers contacting you in light of any potential prejudices they may have? We know it should not, but does it? A name can potentially tell people a lot about you, your background, ethnicity, race, gender, age and could cause unwanted attention, no attention or not the right attention.
Often how an individual may feel about their own name will come from years of societies’ thoughts and insights. Someone with an every day name, may not consider it at all but someone with a very different name may have endured years of torment and may even mean that it has allowed a certain lack of confidence to set in. (Playgrounds can be such cruel places!)
